Exercise psychologists have discovered a drink that makes exercise more pleasureable: water! Fifteen volunteers rand on a treadmill on two different days. On one occasion, they drank water just prior to warming up and again every 20 minutes while they exercised. They received no water before or during the other run. When water was a part of the workout, the subjects reported that their mood rose throughout and remained better than it was beforehand, even though their perceived exertion was unaffected.(Without water, the subjects felt less happy after the run than they did before it.)

A new health study, reported on Yahoo news gave the Key Danger Zones of Health found in reports from 43 Major U.S. Corporations.
The #1 Health Risk reported is Poor Nutrition!
Poor Nutrition 68.3% Vehicle Safety 37.0% Body Fat 35.8%
Stress 33.8% Physical Fitness 22.0% Cholesterol 21.7% Blood Pressure 20.6%
Alcohol 12.8% Personal Safety 11.7% Tobacco 10.3%
The study concluded that “Vitamin and nutrient deficiencies are associated with extremely
common problems such as fatigue, anxiety, and difficulty losing weight.”
This is a very interesting finding, not suprising though. It is well known that nutritional depeletions are at an extremly high level in our society, having an effect on almost all known dis-states. What is alarming and often times NEVER addressed is the amount of DRUG INDUCED NUTRIENT DEPLETIONS. Sounds like great further training for all medical personnel, doesn’t it?
Another interesting point, nutrient depletions can have an effect on at least 7 of the nine other danger zones noted above. Although, if someone was to get in an accident while driving and eating fast food, we could make it a strong 9 out of 9!

As a follow up to Dr. Topouzians article on adding healthy protein to the daily meals, as well as other articles we have posted on hidden sugars, insulin resistance and diabetes, we would now like to bring light to a recent study that is suggesting that there is a corresponging increase of fatty liver disease with obesity and type 2 diabetes.
This study, published in the September issue of the jornal Obesity, is the work of Dr David Ludwig, director of the Optimal Weight for Life program at Children’s Hospital Boston, and collegues.
This study suggests that a diet rich in carbohydrates with a high glycemic index (GI) not only expands waistlines but may also lead ot fatty liver, a condition that results in liver failure and death.
Fatty liver is becoming especially common among children, said Ludwig. Although many adult cases can be caused by alcoholism, that is not so in children, where between 1 in 4 and 1 in 2 overweight American children are thougth to be affected by non-alchoholic fatty liver disease.
That means millions of children are at elevated risk of getting full blown liver disease in adulthood, said Ludwig, who called it a “silent but dangerous epidemic.”
People, if we need any more confirmation on what the Standard American Diet (S.A.D.) is doing to the health of our society, this should do it.
Do we really have to wait until we can call these things epidemics? Lets make the changes now!

The following is an addition by Dr. Keri Topouzian. For more information on Dr. Topouzian and his practice visit www.cfhll.com or just follow the link in the bottom right hand corner to our pharmacy, and you will find his web link there.
As a comedian once spinned: “Cheetahs, one of the sleekest and fastest animals on our planet, eat meat all day long and there’s not an ounce of fat on them. Elephants on the other hand, one of the largest animals on our planet, eat grass and leaves all day long… Folks, these salads are killing us!” Which brings about a good point: most people eat way too much refined carbohydrates and not enough protein. I’m not talking about Adkins and putting your body into ketosis, but protein should be a part of every meal as well as snacks. Most patients that I interview have minimal amounts of protein for breakfast or lunch. Protein will kick start your metabolism in the morning. So don’t have a clue as what to eat?? Here are some ideas…
1. Eggs (free range, not grain fed) 2. Whey protein powder drink or whey protein bars
3. Smoked Salmon (preferably Wild Alaskan)
4. Fresh Wild Alaskan salmon
5. Roasted Turkey cold cuts 6. Fresh Edamame in the pods
7. Yogurt Plain (add your own fresh blueberries, ground flax seed or even coconut flour which is high in protein) 8. Sardines
9. Tofu
10. Nuts of all kinds
11. Seeds of all kinds
12. And if you are in a pinch, Canadian bacon or turkey bacon Remember, if your great great grandmother was sititng next to you and she would not recognize what you were eating… Then you probably shouldn’t be eating it!

Did you know that your oral health (condition of your teeth, gums, mucosa) can directly influence your body’s health? On-going research is showing the relationship of your oral health to:
- Obesity
- Hearth Disease and Stroke
- Pregnancy Problems
- Diabetes
- Respiratory Diseases
- Osteoporosis
In July of 1998, the American Academy of Periodontology launched an effort to educate the public about new findings which support what dental professional s had long suspected: Infections in the mouth can play havoc elsewhere in the body.
Since July of 1998, evidence has continued to mount to support these links. While more research needs to be done to say definitively that people with periodontal disease are at high risk for developing heart disease, stroke, uncontrolled diabetes, preterm births and respiratory disease, peridontist’s do know that periodontal disease is a bacterial infection, and all infections are cause for concern.
Periodontal bacteria can enter the blood stream and travel to major organs and begin new infections. Research is suggesting that this may:
- Contribute to the development of heart disease, the nations leading cause of death.
- Increase the risk of stroke.
- Increase a woman’s risk of having a preterm, low birth weight baby.
- Pose a serious threat to people whose health is compromised by diabetes, respiratory disease, or osteoporosis.
Don’t Ignore Your Oral Health
If you value your oral as well as your overall health, a periodontal evaluation is a good idea. Sometimes the only way to detect periodontal disease is through a periodontal evaluation. A periodontal evaluation may be especially important if you:
- Notice any symptoms of periodontal disease.
- Have heart disease, diabetes, respiratory disease or osteoporosis.
- Are thinking of becoming pregnant.
- Have a family member with periodontal disease. Research suggests that the bacteria that cause periodontal disease can pass through saliva. This means the common contact of saliva in families puts children and couples at risk for contracting the periodontal disease of another family member.
- Have a sore or irritation in your mouth that does not get better within two weeks.
In the ultimate quest for the empowerment of health, let us not oversee the importance of the mouth-body connection.

This next recipe might sound a little bit off the wall, though it really is delicious. We came across this recipe through the book The Rosedale Diet, by Dr. Ron Rosedale.
This book is full of recipes and information for those looking to reset their metabolism through working against issues of insulin resistance and diabetes (see previous article.)
Not only does it take the non-fiber sugar content of potatoes out of the equation, it adds in cauliflower which has the wonder benefits of indole-3-carbinol (i3c) which is proven to help with estrogen metabolism and possibly cancer prevention.
Serves 4
1 head of cauliflower, leaves and stems removed, cut in to quarters
2 tablespoons of creme fraiche
1/2 stick, or 4 tablespoons, sweet butter
salt (preferably premier pink salt) and pepper to taste
1/2 cup almonds, finely ground in a blender
1/2 cup green onions, sliced thin
1. Preheat oven to 400 degress
2. Boil water in large pan. Place cauliflower in the boiling water and cook until soft.
3. Remove the cauliflower from the water, drain, and place in a bowel. Using a hand mixer, add creme fraiche, butter, salt, and pepper to the cauliflower. Whip until the cauliflower is smooth, or has a consistency of mashed potatoes.
4. Drain the cauliflower mixture in a finely meshed strainer to remove excess water. “if you dont have a strainer that is fine enough, strain the cauliflower through a non-bleached coffee filter.”
5. By hand, mix in the nuts and green onions.
6. Greese a ring mold with butter. Add the cauliflower mixture.
7. Bake for 6 to 10 minutes, until the cauliflower is golden brown on top.
Bon apetite.

Cataracts are a coudiness of the lens of the eye, which can cause partial or even total blindness.
Symptoms of cataract are cloudy or blury vision, colors may seem faded, one might notice a glare to headlights, lamps, or even sunlight might appear too bright. Some people will notice a halo around lights. Poor night vision, double vision, multiple images in one eye are all symptoms of cataract or other eye problems.
The common treatment and management of cataract is through eyeglasses, magnifying lenses and surgery.
Cataracts can often be linked to toxicity (heavy metals) or infection, deficient eye nutrients (especially antioxidants), low pH (deficient minerals), toxic liver, and weak adrenals and kidneys.
Nutritionally we like to recommend a range of nutrients that support a healthy eye as well as highly assimable and effective antioxidants. In our QRA practice we test the occipital lobe, which will be a representation of antioxidants and eye health and often find a nutrient such as DHLA Nanoplex (dihydrolipoic acid) will strengthen this point nicely.
Further testing should be done for heavy metal toxicity as well as a possible underlying infection. Once again we find the practice of QRA does this very well. Infections in the teeth/gums often relex to the eyes, so a through QRA examination of this area is a must.
Remember, other areas of concern are the Adrenal/kindey area, liver, and intestinal region (linked to adrenals), so testing and strengthening these areas area a must.
Other special considerations for optimal eye and sytemic health is to eliminate foods with hydrogenated oil, avoid refined sugar and increase fresh organic vegetables/fruits, and cultured foods such as kefir.
